Assistant Membership Director (Former Employee) - Omaha - February 12, 2020. The YMCA was a great way to give back to the community while figuring out what was next in life. Unfortunately, I think that was a much lower priority for most of the management in the corporate offices. It is a struggle in non-profit and community-driven organizations.
The YMCA has a great mission but not a fun work environment. There are many places to work that will treat you with respect and honesty - this isn't one of them. Working with young adults and children is very rewarding. The extended YMCA community is lovely. The mission of the YMCA is excellent, but the execution is lacking.
Camp counsellor (Former Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 13 September 2017. Working for the YMCA Day camps taught me a lot about working with children and working in a team. It solidified my goal of becoming a teacher. It was a very fun, as well as, rewarding experience.

level 1. · 7 yr. ago. I worked at a YMCA as a fitness instructor and it was only a few hours a week. The club I worked at was small, and because they are not-for-profit they are not so intense with making their employees be all about sales. They really didn't promote much personal training at my location, or any at all, but mentioned it to.
